HETTN Le HLE

Hetton Le Hole is probably best known in the area as a mining Town on the South West boundary of the City of Sunderland. It also forms the Southern most edge of the Great North Forest which is a project to establish large new woodlands on the lower agricultural and former mining land. Because we are on the South West boundary of Sunderland we are also on the Border of Durham the land of Prince Bishops.

Major land reclemation projects have been undertaken using derelict land from the former colleries, Hetton Lyons and Ellemore. The scheme at Hetton Lyons has provided three different lakes. A fishing lake which has been stocked by and used by the local angling club. A nature lake to try and attract wildlife. A boating lake which is the largest of the three and is suitable for windsurfing and canoeing. The project also contains football pitches, cycle track, and parkland. An all weather area is also available along with orienteering, roller blading and land skiing which are all available to groups and organisations at reasonable cost.

The facilities available in Hetton do not stop there we have a swimming pool (not Olympic size), cricket and football pitches and squash courts. All within walking distance for myself. We must not forget our site of Special Scientific Interest, Hetton Bogs which was awarded a Conservation Project Certificate of Merit by Northumbria in bloom 1993 and a further commendation in 1994.
